The Loss of the Cutty Sark
The Loss of the Cutty Sark

The Cutty Sark historic tea clipper eight months prior to the fire, Greenwich, London, UK

christine: We were most surprised when we heard that the Cutty Sark was engulfed by fire and resultingly gutted, as we had just seen it months before in our trip to England. I remember being too tired to walk on the ship (and mostly because we were aiming to visit the International Dateline before dusk), but I have fond memories sitting before it and looking to its grandeur while treating ourselves to ice cream.

What a tragic loss to England.

Yes, a sad event but it could have been much worse. Many of the ship's timbers, the masts, sails and rigging had been removed for storage. The prow, anchor, figurehead, wheel, galley and workshops were also safely elsewhere.
