Another View of Lions' Gate
 Another View of Lions' Gate

Another old favorite of the Lions' Gate Bridge at night, North Vancouver

christine: From the moment of taking the photo in 2003 til now, I'm always at a loss as to what sort of post-processing would be best for the shot. Better monochromatic? Better in colour? On one hand, I love love love the clouds in colour. But those streetlamp-lit trees to the right always distract me and make me want to lose the saturation. What do you think?

At any rate, I have full intentions of returning one of these nights to try this shot again... this time being sensible enough to photograph in raw-mode. :)
Canon EOS 10D: 15mm (24mm) f/3.5 30 ISO 100 Capture time: 2003-12-07 01:01:43

i guess colour is a good decision here, i would choose it too.
one note, i would take this shot with a aperture of F8.0 because of the streetlights. ah and shooting in RAW is always good :)

I agree with Joerg on running with RAW at nearly all times. And, he’s probably right on the aperture, too, but it’s three years too late for that!

If there’s a problem in this shot, it is because it is too good all over! Try some selective coloring which favors the striding impact of the bridge and suppresses the trees and setting. I’ve looked at tinkering with the color in the frame but that becomes too obvious and b&w takes away the punch.

My suggestion is a blend of modified color for the bridge and racey sky imposed on a duotone of the full shot.

I at first I thought of early colored film technics like autochrome and kodachrome but then it grew into hand coloring a black and white picture.

The color of the trees and the bridge stike me! :)

Selective Color is another alternative if you like to two tone aspect but don't want to take the time to hand color it
