Chickadee in a Tree
 Chickadee in a Tree

Black-capped Chickadee, Delta BC
Submission for this week's Moody Monday theme, small.

christine: This past weekend we decided to spend a sunny afternoon at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary. We had heard that there were a litter of goslings (baby geese) in the area, so we were hoping to find and photograph them. Sadly, we never did see those baby geese. That's the name of the game when it comes to photography- the shot you think you will get doesn't always happen as you would have hoped. And the shot you never expected to be much turns out to be among your best.

While we were walking by a pond, we were greeted by a friendly chickadee, who we saw perched on a low branch observing us while we fed birdseed to a pair of mallard ducks. Curiously, I grabbed a small handful of seed out of my pocket and held my hand out boldly, inviting the chickadee. Sim stood by with camera in hand.

He flew onto a closer branch for a few seconds before swooping down and perching himself on my finger. I still remember the feel of his tiny claws and the weightlessness of his body landing on my finger. He stayed only a few seconds before returning to the safety of the branch. I tried holding out the seed again and again he returned to my finger, before flying off to a tree off in the distance. Sim managed to get a couple of shots to remember my special moment with the little chickadee. In thanks, I left him an extra pile of seed and left him in peace.

Excellent DOF in this one! The bird stands out very well against the background.
